Corrections Policy

Last updated

FLYPEDIA will contain errors. This page explains what to report, how reports are handled, and what the project does and does not promise in return.

What you can report

Reports are welcome on any of the following:

  • factual errors in article text
  • incorrect specifications, performance figures or dimensions
  • incorrect dates, production totals or registration details
  • historical inaccuracies, including disputed or superseded accounts
  • broken, redirected or incorrect reference links
  • citations that do not support the statement attached to them
  • photography credit, licence or attribution problems
  • wording that is misleading, ambiguous or reads as promotional
  • missing information that a reader would reasonably expect
  • translation errors or inconsistencies between the English and French text
  • accessibility problems and technical faults

What to include

A useful report identifies the page, quotes or locates the passage, states what is wrong, and, where possible, gives a source supporting the correction.

A report that includes a source can usually be acted on. A report that only asserts a figure is wrong may take considerably longer, because the existing figure already has a source behind it and the two have to be weighed against each other.

How reports are handled

Reports are reviewed by the editorial side of the project. Verifying a correction frequently means consulting several sources, because the disagreement that produced the error often exists in the published record itself.

Where a report is substantiated, the entry is corrected. Where sources genuinely conflict, the outcome may instead be that the entry is rewritten to present the disagreement rather than to assert either figure.

Where a report cannot be substantiated, the entry is left as it stands.

What is not promised

FLYPEDIA is a small project, and it is better to say this plainly than to publish a service standard it cannot meet. It does not undertake:

  • to accept every report, or to treat a report as correct because it was made
  • to reply individually to every report
  • to respond or to act within any particular period
  • to notify a reporter of the outcome of their report

Reports concerning copyright, image attribution or data protection are treated differently: these are handled on their own terms and are described on the Copyright & Image Licensing and Privacy pages respectively.

How corrections appear

Corrections are made to the entry itself. Substantive changes to an entry's factual content are reflected in its sources where the correction introduced new material.

FLYPEDIA does not currently publish a per-entry revision history or a public corrections log. If that changes, this page will be updated to describe it.

Where to send a report

Reports go to randgard45@gmail.com. Please put the page address in the subject line where you can.

Reports are read. For what the project does and does not undertake in return, see above.
